This web-based survey was part of a larger overall study conducted by an independent third-party partner to determine sexual preferences and practices.
The majority (54%) still rely entirely on their hands, while a growing number (15.5%) use sex toys. (Interestingly enough, 35% of people using sex toys report having better orgasms by themselves than with a partner.)
When it comes to spicing up masturbation play, 10.5% of people like watching erotic media such as a video. A small number (5.3%) rely on just their imaginations.
“There isn’t one ‘right’ way to masturbate,” says Dr. Jenni Skyler, PhD, LMFT, C-PST, and Adam & Eve’s resident sex therapist. “For some people, their hands provide everything they need. Others enjoy the additional stimulation of a vibrator or stimulator, or the use of erotic content. The important takeaway is that masturbation is a healthy form of self-care, and people shouldn’t feel embarrassed of ashamed about it.”
